Day 4 :: Lyrics

31 waysI cannot think of a finer writing style than songwriting.

What a songwriter says in 35 lines it takes me 35 paragraphs and you are surely bored at the end of my rant and you’re teary by the end of the song.

It’s incredible.

I never appreciated lyrics much until I moved to Nashville. I watch as my songwriter friends slave over a sentence and rework a few lines and the final product could just take your breath away.

Talk about making your words matter!

So next time you LOVE a song, don’t just think about the performer. Think about the WRITER. That’s the person who deserves the first standing ovation when your heart is moved.

. . . . .

On Fridays, I like to do a little list – we call it TOP 5 FRIDAY.

So today I want to list my top 5 favorite lyrics … that come to mind right now. Because you and I both know that as soon as I hit publish I am going to think of eight more that I wish I could add.

1. Taylor Swift // Everything Has Changed

“All I know is we said, ‘Hello.’ So dust off your highest hopes.”

Seriously. UGH. That’s such a great use of words and the idea of your highest hopes. Beautiful word picture.

2. Joy Williams // Golden Thread

“Just wanna know while everything’s unraveling. I’m hanging on, just hanging by a golden thread.”

I love the sense of hope in a hard time in this line. You just know that a golden thread is worth holding on to.

3. Lady Antebellum // Goodbye Town

“I can’t erase the memories. And I can’t burn the whole place down.”

Genius. When you think of where a heartbreak happened, you know those are the two options. If I stay in this town, I will always remember where the memories occurred. Such a beautiful way to talk about a harsh reality.

4. Meredith Andrews // Pieces

“You are completely known. You are completely loved. This is where you belong.”

I literally can’t hear Meredith sing this line without tearing up. Truth will do that to a person. [But really. EVERY line in this song. EVERY ONE.]

5. Mumford & Sons // After The Storm

“With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.”

I want this to be me.

So those are my five! What’s your favorite lyric? Write a blog post about it or tweet it or share it below in the comments!

My favorite lyric is follow your heart sweet heart. From Lady A’s new song Compass. 🙂

    Sanctus Real, The Redeemer 🙂
The whole thing really but especially the part where it says, “I’ve lost my faith in so many things, but I still believe in You.”

If ever I forget my true identity, show me who I am, and help me to believe.

AND just because it makes so much sense to me even though I’m no longer 22. T swift.
We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time. It’s miserable and magical.
I have to make myself remember that it’s magical. And when I do it becomes way more fun.

That Mumford one — totally. Me too.

There are so many lyrics that I love.

One that came to mind is from “Re: Stacks” by Bon Iver. Two lines I love from that song are the beginning line and the end line. “This my excavation and today is Kumran.” (FOR REAL? Any musician who can put something like that into a song wins major points. I love the meaning that it conveys, even if not everyone will get it. I love the idea of an excavation of the heart and soul – digging things up, dusting them off, and examining what you find. Amazing!) And the last line, “Your love will be safe with me.” Isn’t that what we all want?

    yay! Thanks for the plug:)

My fav lyrics… a toss up between the first and last verse of the same song… My God by Gemma Hayes…

    first verse –
    My God
    Hope you’re on call
‘Cause I maybe in danger of crashing before I get to fall

    last verse –
    My God
Is it alright if I turn right back around?
‘Cause I reckon I fly highest
When my feet are planted on the ground

    Ah– a tie—
    “I’ve traveled through my history
    from certainty to mystery.
God speaks in rhyme and paradox,
    this I know is true.”
    by Carrie Newcomer and

“And maybe it’s a better thing,
    a better thing,
To be more than merely innocent,
but to be broken and redeemed by love
and maybe this old world is bent,
    but it’s waking up,
    I’m waking up. ”

My friend wrote a song called “Show Mercy”. One of the lines is: ‘To the sister who has fallen, like a flower that’s bowed its head’ … So beautiful.

My favourite is words by Hawk Nelson

    “Words can build you up
    Words can break you down
Start a fire in your heart or
    Put it out”

I heard this song at the end of June and it started a passion in my heart to use my words wisely. Now speak love has taken that passion one step further. 🙂

Currently loving this lyric from Steve Moakler “Thing About Us”:

You don’t have to say a word, to speak to me.
You don’t have to know what hurts, to heal me.

In an old one from Shane and Shane, Be Near, this line gets me every time:

    Your fullness is mine
    revelation divine
    but, o, to taste
to know much more than a page
    to feel Your embrace…

    1. I am Judas’ kiss, but you love me anyway. (You love me anyway: sidewalk prophets). DANG.
    2. I am royalty, I have destiny, I have been set free, I’m gonna shake, history. (The Anthem, Jake Hamilton)
    3. You were made by a God who knows your name. And he doesn’t make mistakes. You are wanted. (Wanted: Dara Mcclean)
    4. Hakuna Matata, it means no worries for the rest of your days. (Hakuna Matata: the lion king)
    5. I hope, sometimes you wonder about me. (All too well, Taylor Swift)
    6. Don’t you worry your pretty little mind, people throw rocks at things that shine. (Ours, Taylor Swift
    7. Your worth more than gold (Gold, Britt Nicole)
    8. Id rather die like Christ, than live unholy. (Lecrae)

So many! But the one that came to my mind first:
“You are a novel in a sea of magazines.” Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. That whole song is great, but that’s my favorite line.

Came to your blog today to leave a word for you, friend. When I got here, I read about lyrics. I have to say that my current favorite line is from a book, but the sentiment would make for beautiful lyrics: “I would rather go down encouraging someone than having a heart full of words I never said.” Thank you, Annie, for Speak Love. I’m a bit of a puddle reading it as I wait for a flight in the Nasville airport. Ugly. Cry.

Right now, every word in Britt Nicole’s “Walk on the Water” is hitting me in the heart.

And these words from JJ Heller’s “What Love Really Means”:

I will love you for you
Not for what you have done
    Or what you will become

I will love you for you
I will give you the love
The love that you never knew

    The Assembly, Heartbeat

“If my heart could only beat for one thing, let it be to please you.”

So much more to the song, but this ALWAYS sticks with me. The core of who I am.

The lyric that ALWAYS makes my heart ache and my eyes tear up is from I Need You to Love Me by BarlowGirl (which is my all time favorite band ever).

Right before the chorus, they sing:
“You’re the God who has all things and still you want me. I need You to love me.”

So many times I’ve sang that from the bottom of my heart and willed my soul to believe it. I am so thankful for God’s grace and love.

    Well, I have a few. . .

I’m really liking Josh Wilsons’ new song “Pushing back the dark”, especially the lyric that says
“Inside the bigger plan, we might not understand. But if we just keep walking on we will see the kingdom come”

And Tenth Avenue North’s “You are More”

“Cause this is not about what you’ve done, but what’s been done for you. This is not about where you’ve been, but where your brokenness brings you to. This is not about what you feel, but what he felt to forgive you, and what it felt to make you loves”

    Britt Nicoles’ Gold
“Whatever you’ve been told, you’re worth more than gold”

For King and Countrys’ (love them, my favorite band of all time <3) Busted Heart
"Winter has come back again, feels like the season won't end". . .because when you live in Minnesota EVERYONE can relate to this.

And one of my Favorites, I highly sugest Johnny Diazs' More Beautiful you

"There could never be a more beautiful you, don't buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through. You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do. There could never be a more beautiful you"

I could go on and on, but those are just a few of my favorites 🙂 .

Sing like never before Oh my soul.

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great and Your heart is kind
    Matt Redman

Our lives are so meaningful we’ve got to live because He is so meaningful

You and I are of the same mind about songwriting. It is my favorite form of the written word – part poem, part story, every letter counts.

It’s hard to pick favorite lyrics (see above) but these from Andrew Peterson have planted themselves in my soul: “Give us faith to be strong, Give us strength to be faithful.” Amen.

    Meredith Andrews, ‘You’re Not Alone’

“You’re not alone, for I am here.
Let me wipe away your every tear
My love I’ve never left your side
I have seen you through the darkest night
And I’m the one that’s loved you all your life, All of your life.”

    Switchfoot: Only Hope
“Sing to me of the song of the stars,
of your galaxies dancing and laughing and laughing again
When it feels like my dreams are so far,
Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again.”
I like this whole song though. It’s beautiful. (I’m sure I could think of more lyrics… but like you said, this is what popped into my head 🙂 )

Laura Story’s “Blessings” – the whole song really, but especially these words:

What if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

P.S. I’ve loved reading these comments. I’m finding a few new favorites in everyone’s suggestions.
